Overdose Risk After Incarceration:
Tuesday, November 20, 2007 A very large-scale mortality study of former prisoners in Australia compared overdose fatalities in the first two weeks after release to be 9.3 times higher among men and 6.4 times higher among women than the rate after six months. (A number of citations are given for similar findings in other countries.) One key conclusion: "There is a need to expand pharmacotherapy programs in the pre-release period..." And yet, such programs are exceedingly rare in America and there remains an inadequate amount of substitution treatment in prisons around the world...". Source: Kariminia et al.
